Automation Project Engineer - Multi-year contract

We’re seeking an experienced Automation & Controls Engineer/Project Engineer to deliver automation work packages across major capital projects. You’ll work on process line equipment upgrades, integrating advanced electrical, PLC and SCADA systems into critical industrial operations.

This role suits someone with strong hands-on automation expertise, who can take projects from concept through commissioning while working in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

Automation & Control Systems

• Program PLCs and Safety PLCs, including setup of new hardware/software and interpreting existing logic.
• Develop HMI interfaces using platforms such as Citect, PanelView and WinCC.
• Design and implement electrical and automation control systems, including HMI development.
• Specify and select appropriate technology (PLC, drives, sensors, actuators, MCC, motors).
• Design construction-ready drawings: SLDs, motor control schematics, panel layouts, I/O wiring, loop drawings and network architecture.
• Troubleshoot systems using P&IDs and electrical diagrams.
• Design efficient alarm strategies and fault-finding guides.

Project Engineering & Delivery

• Provide automation input across all project phases as required.
• Prepare technical specifications, safety requirement specifications, functional descriptions and technical reports.
• Deliver commissioning and test plans to validate safety PLC code.
• Conduct hardware and software training for technical personnel.
• Ensure compliance with relevant engineering standards.
• Prepare stakeholder presentations and documentation.
• Oversee installation and commissioning of automation work packages.

Skills & Experience Required

• Degree in Electrical, Automation, Instrumentation or related Engineering discipline.
• Minimum 7 years’ industrial experience within multi-discipline engineering projects.
• Strong PLC and SCADA programming capability, ideally with:
• Siemens S7-300 / S7-1500 series PLCs
• Citect SCADA
• Experience with industrial communication protocols (Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet-based I/O).
• Ability to interpret and troubleshoot using P&IDs and electrical drawings.

Highly Regarded Experience

• Material handling or warehouse automation systems.
• Crane automation systems.
• GEM80 PLCs.
• iBA data logging.
• AC & DC drives and motors.
• Machine safety certification, safeguarding and safe access design.
